Bún Chả Hà Nội. Eat what Obama ate in Vietnam at Phở 777 on 2nd Fridays.

“Northern Vietnamese cuisine is unique because it is accessible. In Vietnam, you can find any of the featured menu items on sidewalk restaurants to indoor restaurants. The dishes themselves are for the common people; it is simplistic and not fancy, people of all classes enjoy these dishes” says Linh Thị Thùy Nguyễn

One specialty dish on their menu, hailing from Vietnam’s capitol, Hanoi, is Bún Chả Hà Nội, a rustic vermicelli noodle dish paired with chargrilled pieces of sweet and savory pork belly and patties basking in a light fish sauce broth. Pickled daikon and radish sit atop the caramelized meats and are served with fresh herbs and vegetables as garnish.

“There was a wave of excitement when President Obama visited Vietnam and ate Bún Chả Hà Nội. Young, old, all generations not only in Vietnam, but also in Singapore, in the U.S. and other parts of the world were intrigued by the fact that a president from one of the strongest, most powerful countries in the world would eat not only one portion, but two of this commoner Hanoi dish; so it must be exquisite” says Linh Thị Thùy Nguyễn.

As restauranteurs, the couple’s goal is to not only introduce Bún Chả Hà Nội to the predominantly Southern and Central Vietnamese-American community in Chicago, but to all other groups as well. They believe that as more and more people enjoy this dish, it becomes a gateway to the diverse range of other Northern Vietnamese staples highlighted at their restaurant. This regional cuisine would offer a new and distinct taste to Vietnamese cuisine to diners.

Join the 48th Ward and Axis Lab on 2nd Fridays, July 8th , 2016 in tasting Bún Chả Hà Nội, the meal President Obama shared with Anthony Bourdain in Vietnam, at Phở 777 along with other featured menu items at 1065 West Argyle Street, Chicago, IL 60640. Other highlighted menu options include Nem Cua Bể, Northern Vietnamese style crab and pork eggrolls, Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm, Rice vermicelli noodles with tofu and fermented fish paste, Bún Ốc Hà Nội, Rice vermicelli snail noodle soup, Bò Sót Vang, Beef stew in red wine sauce, and Bánh Mỳ Bít Tết & Trứng Óp La, Beef steak and sunny side up egg with baguette. BYOB.

Hope to see you there!
